Can variants of the same product be fed into a FIFO flow path?

In practice, this is only permitted if the downstream process or the internal customer has explicitly accepted this mixing. However, if the assembly line expects a supply that is absolutely free of variants, the FIFO pipelines in the warehouse or supermarket must be strictly segregated by variant. How is the buffer storage for a FIFO transfer point correctly sized?
