Development of a new site and warehouse concept for an electricity supply company in Germany
The challenge: An energy and utilities company was faced with the question of whether its historically evolved warehousing structure would still meet future requirements regarding security of supply, grid expansion and material availability. A lack of transparency regarding costs, processes and transport flows, as well as a heterogeneous network of service providers, made it difficult to make well-informed decisions. The client commissioned ebp-consulting to develop a future-proof site and warehouse concept.
ebp-consulting’s solution: Firstly, ebp analysed the existing warehouse structure through a comprehensive analysis of data, processes and costs, thereby providing transparency regarding the warehouse network and the service provider structure. Based on the identified weaknesses and future logistics requirements, we derived specific areas for action. We then calculated future space requirements and transport volumes and, as part of the network planning, determined the optimal number and location of warehouse sites across various service provider scenarios. The options were evaluated using utility analysis and business case assessments. For the recommended sites, we drew up an ideal plan for the warehouse layout and logistics processes.
The result: The client now has a robust, economically evaluated target vision for its warehouse and logistics network. A clear basis for decision-making, an optimised site concept and an implementation roadmap with milestones lay the foundations for an efficient, scalable supply chain and a high level of security of supply in the energy sector.
Development of a logistics concept for an energy and water supply company
The challenge: An energy supplier was operating a logistics structure that had evolved over time, comprising a central warehouse, specialised warehouses and around 30 decentralised material stores at substations and waterworks. The logistics operations support the construction, operation and maintenance of the network infrastructure, as well as affiliated group companies and external service providers. Increasing demands on security of supply, KRITIS requirements and cost efficiency made a sustainable overall concept necessary.
The solution from ebp-consulting: Working closely with the client, ebp analysed the processes, organisation, infrastructure and costs of the existing warehouse structure. Building on this, we determined future requirements, identified potential for optimisation and developed a target vision for the logistics and site structure. Various options were evaluated against agreed criteria, and a preferred option was selected following a cost-benefit analysis. Stakeholder-focused communication underpinned the project throughout.
The result: The client received a comprehensive logistics and site concept, ready for decision-making, including clear recommendations for action and a modular plan of measures and implementation. It safeguards supply, meets KRITIS requirements, reduces investment, operating and energy costs, and creates an efficient, transparent supply chain for the company and its group subsidiaries.
